2/9/1939 after a quick work up at Portland, followed by minor repairs, she joined 7 DF, stationed on the Humber. Spent the winter 1939/40 operating on the East Coast.
6/11/1939 in action with Jersey against the German Destroyers Erich Giese and Hans Lody off the Haisborough Light Vessel. She had to tow the damaged Jersey back to Immingham.
17/12/1939 broke down at Sullom Voe and had a refit at Brigham & Cowan, Hull, finishing 2/3/1940 followed by repairs to her feed water tanks in the KGV dock, Hull.
21/3/1940 joined the Home Fleet for the Norwegian campaign, but on 18/5/1940 was ordered to the Mediterranean and joined 14 DF based at Alexandria
17 and 22/9/1940 Bombardments of Sidi Barrani
She then continued with Patrols, Sorties and Convoy operations, including Operations Excess and Tiger, and was part of the advance Squadron based at Suda Bay.
23/4/1941 as part of the Malta Striking Force at Lampedusa she torpedoed and sank the Italian Auxiliary cruiser Egeo
21/5/1941 while operating in the Kaso Strait she was attacked by Italian Cant Z1007bs and hit by three high level bombs. She split in two abaft the bridge and sank in 97 seconds. Casualties were high, 116 presumed killed.
