"This humble little vessel may seem insignificant compared to the world class liners and warships built on the Clyde but she has an important place in the River's history and. indeed, in much wider terms.
No 1 was built in 1862, the first of 38 steam propelled hopper barges that the Clyde Navigation built to work with their dredger fleet. No 26 was the last steam propelled hopper but Simon Lobnitz built two diesel powered vessels (No 27 and No 28) just before they finally closed in 1962/63
So the Clyde Navigation owned 40 hopper barges
How come the numbers only went to No 28? Well, from 1892 onwards they started to reuse some names i.e. numbers but only intermittently. So after No 18 came the second No 1 then the second No 3 then came No 19. The second No 2 didn't come along until after No 22 and was immediately followed by the second No 6 before going on to N0 23; And so it continued until there was eventually three No 1s, No3s and No9s, two No2s,No4s, No5s, No6s, No 7s, No8s and No 10s and one of everything else up to No 28.
But this vessel, the first No1, another of Andrew Brown's inventions, was the first of 142 such vessels that Simons built for ports around the globe and she deserves a unique distinction in Clyde history."
