mv SOCOTRA built by Barclay Curle & Company Glasgow, Yard No 691 Engines by the shipbuilder Port of Registry: London Propulsion: Two x four cylinder opposed piston 2SCSA Doxford~type oil engines, 9000bhp, twin screws, 16 knots Launched: Thursday, 18/03/1943 Built: 1943 Ship Type: General Cargo Liner, 12 Passengers Ship's Role: UK/East Indian service Tonnage: 7840 gross; 3864 net; 9902 dwt Length: 465ft 8in Breadth: 62ft 10in Draught: 28ft 1in Owner History: Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company Status: Scrapped - 01/07/1965 Web site: http://www.lansdale.co.uk/socotra.htm Remarks: 02/1942: Keel laid. Built to an austere wartime specification and not designed
for any particular trade.
18/03/1943: Launched for The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, London.
15/05/1943: Trials.
18/05/1943: Delivered. Immediately taken up under the Liner Requisition
Scheme and manned by Hain Steamship Company.
02/08/1946: Returned to P&O, put on UK/India service.
13/08/1946: Sailed on first P&O voyage.
06/1952: Converted at Rotterdam to burn heavy oil, the first of the company’s
motorships to be converted.
28/03/1964: Helped save 470 survivors of the burning troopship EMPIRE WINDRUSH 115 miles NW of Algiers.
18/06/1965: Sold to Chiap Hua Mfy Co (1947) Ltd, Hong Kong for scrap.
01/07/1965: Demolition commenced.
