Additional Information: MERMAID was to be known as BLACK STAR but President Nkrumah of Ghana was ousted before launch and the ship was launched as No. 2284. On completion in 1968 she was laid up in Rothesay Dock "owned" by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office until the RN was required to take her in 1972.
