Remarks: Completed 10 Dec 1963. HMS DIDO was originally ordered and laid down as the Rothesay Class frigate HMS HASTINGS but was completed as a unit of the Leander Class. As a result her internal layout differed slightly from later Leander Class frigates. Although the naming ceremony still went ahead, fog prevented HMS DIDO's launch occurring on the 21st December 1961 and she took to the water the following day. On the 16th May 1969 HMS DIDO attended a Fleet Review at Spithead to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of NATO. The 1981 Defence Review called for the disposal of some older frigates. Like her sister ship HMS BACCHANTE, HMS DIDO was paid off and sold to New Zealand. After a short refit by Vosper Thornycroft she re
commissioned as HMNZS SOUTHLAND on the 18th July 1983. HMNZS SOUTHLAND was eventually decommissioned in 1995, having been replaced by a newer Anzac Class Frigate. Later sunk as an artificial reef.
