03/09/1884: Registered.
06/09/1884: Ran trials and delivered to The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. She and her Caird~built sisters TASMANIA (1884) and
the triple~expansion~engined COROMANDEL (1885) and BENGAL (1885),
were designed for rapid conversion to armed merchant cruisers or
troopships if required, although without any Government subsidy;
they had watertight doors with the mechanism well above the
waterline. CHUSAN's hotel fittings were comfortable although less
ornate than those of the vessels on the Australian run, though she
had electric light throughout her passenger accommodation, and she
was a great favourite. She could carry up to 107 First Class and 44 Second Class passengers.
24/09/1884: Maiden sailing London/Calcutta.
28/01/1885: Stranded near Perim lighthouse but towed off by THAMES at the second attempt.
24/09/1886: One round voyage UK/Australia (two more in succession beginning
26 August 1887).
12/1886: Draught now 25ft 10½in.
04/1887: Brought passengers from TASMANIA home from Marseilles after she
was wrecked on the south coast of Corsica.
30/09/1892: Rammed by an inbound Swedish steamer when leaving Royal
Albert Dock, London. Returned to the dock for minor repairs before
sailing on 02/10.
25/07/1894: Salved the disabled sailing ship FALLS OF ETTRICK and towed her into
the Hughli.
1902: UK/Far East trade.
05/1906: Sold to Shah Steam Navigation Company, Bombay for the pilgrim
trade. Renamed SHAH NAJAF.
05/1907: Sold to Indian shipbreakers in Bombay.
