ss CHILKA built by William Denny & Brothers Dumbarton, Yard No 1141 Engines by Shipbuilder Propulsion: steam, Brown Curtis turbines, 762 nhp, 13.5 knots Launched: Wednesday, 08/06/1921 Built: 1921 Ship Type: Passenger Cargo Vessel Tonnage: 4360 tons Length: 390 feet Breadth: 52.7 feet Draught: 23.2 feet Owner History: British India Steam Navigation Company Glasgow & London Status: Sunk - 11/03/1942
Remarks: Sunk by Japanese submarine whilst acting as troopship. 7 men lost their lives. The survivors made for the Mentawei Islands in the ship's boats. Capt Bird, the ship's surgeon, some engineers and a gunner then took a steel lifeboat and spent 35 days at sea before being picked up by a Greek ship. Capt Bird was given the OBE and Cadet Shahabuddin, an Indian, the BEM and Lloyds War Medal for gallantly trying to put out fires on the ship despite having himself been imjured by shell fire.
