 The Historic Town of Ayr
The Fort Entrance
This is the entrance to the fort, built here by Oliver Cromwell.
From this Citadel of Ayr, he commanded the Scotland that grew to hate him until
his death.
I don't know if the earth has been raised to cover most of it, or if the arch
was simply incorporated in the wall in later times, but it is surely indicative
of the Scots mentality to hide this treasure up an obscure lane!
I myself only discovered it recently and was astonished!
The fort remains can be seen in various parts of the town, most notably at the
harbour, where a merchant erected a precarious looking folly at the corner of
two walls there.
As promised earlier, he is a picture of Miller's Folly...
