On This Day: 4th December |
Noteable events involving Clydebuilt ships 4th December:
On this day, 4th December, 1916 yet another Anchor liner became the victim of war.
Only the day before, the PERUGIA had been torpedoed, today the CALEDONIA was sunk by enemy submarine 125 miles south of Malta as she performed trooping duties.
She had been built in 1905 at D&W Henderson for her role in Anchor's Glasgow-New York service and was 9223 grt.
Reportedly, only one life was lost in the sinking.
On this day in 1998, the former Reardon Smith ship NEW WESTMINSTER CITY arrived at Alang for breaking, the 16704 grt bulk carrier was launched at Govan on the 14th July 1971.
